I am Professor Emeritus of forest ecology and silviculture in the College of Natural Resources and Ecology Center at Utah State University. I have worked over 45 years on the production ecology of coniferous forest and quantitative silviculture. Much of this work involves development and implementation of strategies to achieve desired future stand conditions for a variety of resource objectives.

 

I received my Ph.D. in forest ecology from the University of Washington in 1976. Before joining the faculty at Utah State University in 1980, I was a researcher for Weyerhaeuser Company. I was a Fulbright Fellow at the University of Edinburgh in 1991-92 and spent sabbatical years in Seville, Spain in 2001-2002 and at the Università degli Studi di Torino in 2010-2011. In 1991 I was elected a Fellow of the Society of American Foresters and in 2005 SAF presented me with the Barrington Moore Memorial Award for Distinguished Biological Research and in 2018 with the Forest Award.
